Voyage Summary
Aimed at the more experienced sailor or those wanting to throw themselves in at the deep end! 450 nautical miles, four countries and ten nights! With possible stops in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, you’ll certainly see the British Isles. We’ve left plenty of time so it won’t be all about the sailing but we do have to get there! You can expect some more challenging sailing and an expectation that you’ll get involved in standing watches and sailing Irene.
Sailing Highlights
This is a fabulous opportunity to get some real miles under your keel. You can expect to learn a lot from the crew about sailing a traditional ship, navigation and passage planning. Our team love sharing their knowledge so if you’re looking to build you experience for an RYA or MCA qualification, this is a great chance.
You’ll experience a number of notable sailing areas that provide some demanding sailing. Rounding The Lizard and Lands End give us an early chance to get down with the tides on the passage plan. They’re not ones to get wrong unless you’re a long way off shore! Once round those, it’s time to shape our course north and hopefully take advantage of the prevailing south westerlies on the port quarter.
It’s then across the Bristol Channel for a quick stop, somewhere like Milford Haven. Cardigan Bay is next, which will take us to the island of Anglesey and onwards to the Isle of Man. This provides another opportunity for a stop in the delightful Port St Mary.
We might then call into Bangor or Belfast in Northern Ireland. These provide a great chance for a break before tackling the North Channel, as we head into Scottish waters. The North Channel can get rather lumpy as the channel narrows significantly. Hopefully, you’ve found your sea legs by now, though.
Finally, once round the Kintyre Peninsular, we’re into the stunning Inner Hebrides. We’ll work our way up past the Whisky Isles of Islay and Jura and round the south side of Mull. If time allows, there might be an opportunity for a ‘wee dram’ at one of the many distilleries in the area.
All too soon, we’ll be mooring up in Oban.
Itinerary Details
The itinerary will be dictated by weather on this voyage. We are unlikely to get settled weather for the entire voyage so some impromptu stops to hide from the worst of it is inevitable. However, some things worth a look if time and tide allow are:
Port St Mary: Picturesque port on the south side of the Isle of Man
Titanic Museum: Belfast
Laphroaig Distillery: Port Ellen, Islay
