Irene Rebuild
20th September 2008 Stepping the Main Mast has in itself been a stepping stone in Irene’s progress. There has been a flurry of activity with organising the electrical system, the fire protection, the plumbing, ballasting, engine room bulkhead, decking. The error in the port engine gear box has been rectified. Jimmie Lawrence sail makers have been appointed and it is now up to us to provide the spars. Indefatigable Ben has played a major role in shaping the mizzen mast.
The local plantation have trees, now with their collars felt. When they resume their further career as booms, gaffs and topmast, sail makers will be down to measure up and create.
The
old dolly winch will serve the mizzen. We have acquired some elm, which
because of its convoluted grain is less splitable than other timber. Mast
wedges, winch drums, windlass drums and dead eyes are all in process. We
have even acquired a small quantity of lignum vitae to make six dead eyes
for the more stressed shroud positions.
Much of the expensive electrical gear has been bought. We await delivery. Marina Power are taking responsibility for installation and wiring. Firepro will have defended the engine room by the time this report is on the web.
